Episode 291: Raising Gen Z with Purpose in a Digital World with Stephanie Shackelford

In this episode of The Forgotten Podcast, Jami talks with Dr. Stephanie Shackelford, senior fellow at Barna Group, about the growing mental health crisis among Gen Z and how parents and caregivers can respond with wisdom, intention, and hope.

Drawing from national research and conversations with experts, Stephanie explains how the rise of smartphones and constant digital immersion has reshaped how young people experience relationships, identity, and purpose. While technology itself isn’t the sole problem, it has contributed to increased anxiety, isolation, disrupted sleep, and a loss of meaningful connection.

Stephanie offers practical and encouraging guidance for families who want to make changes but feel overwhelmed. From creating tech-free spaces to fostering deeper relationships and helping kids discover purpose beyond themselves, she reminds listeners that small, consistent steps can make a meaningful difference over time.

This conversation is both eye-opening and hope-filled, equipping parents, foster families, and church communities to better support Gen Z’s mental and emotional well-being.
